Do you judge a book by its cover? Do you see a big fat asshole in the self-checkout line breathing heavily through their nostrils, not paying attention, holding up the line and think “I’d like to throat punch that plump hunk of shit and then seduce his sister, mail him some nude polaroid’s and burn down his apartment?” That is wrong of you, I never do that.
Let’s talk about an album that I think you can judge by its cover (try to stay calm here…I find that four large black coffees and Marlboro reds help). The album I’m talking about is, GZA’s Liquid Swords. It features one of my favorite covers of all time and I also love the title, and that is all even before the music. I guess I do like to judge things on the surface, I just hope I’m not as harsh as you.
This album was released in that foul year of our lord 1995 and was produced by RZA. I watched the Wu-Tang documentary, Of Mics and Men and was inspired to dig into all the albums RZA produced early on in Wu-Tang’s ascension. It is very, very, very impressive. Among them are Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers, Method Man’s Tical, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, Ghostface Killah’s Iron Man, Wu-Tang Forever and the above-mentioned Liquid Swords. That is as impressive as any other stretch in production that I can think of– in any genre.
Liquid Swords starts off with one of my favorite RZA produced tracks, which also means it’s one of my favorite tracks in all of hip-hop and just a great all-around song in my airtight little opinion hole, not to be confused with one of my many loose, floppy and dusty holes. Here is that song now, it’s the title track:
That is my favorite song on the long player, but I think they are all good and I’m going to have a rock-hard time picking out another track for any of you neophytes to sample. If you are someone who has not delved too deep into hip hop RZA and the albums I mentioned I think are a good a place to start as any, though admittingly I’m pretty much a novice myself.
If you have never had sex with your 1st cousin, good for you! Not many of us can make that proud claim, but just know that you can slip any time. I guess RZA and GZA are cousins and I think we can rest assured that they have never done sex on each other, but they have appeared in one of my favorite Jim Jarmusch scenes, check it out!
Fucking awesome isn’t it?
As for Liquid Swords here is another track that I love, mostly with my ears and not my sausage fingers, 4thChamber:
If you don’t like all that shit, I will try not to pass judgement on you. I did once judge a lady at Wal-Mart, on a rascal, that would not wait to get fully out of the store before she dove into the half a fried chicken she apparently had just purchased. By judge I mean gave me a boner.
If you have not done so, check out some RZA produced music.
