After the last edition featuring A Ass Pocket of Whiskey it seemed a very appropriate time to do one on a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album. For any neophytes I think Extra Width is a very good place to start. As much as I hate vulgarity the title does beg for a penis joke. Let’s think of one together right now. Mine was pretty funny albeit short, flakey and disfigured. I hope yours came out ok.
I’m going to put some Habanero Icy Hot on my little dork for posterity as I write this and for a charge of inspiration. To the fooking music. This album comes out hitting hard with Afro and pretty much carries that intensity all the way through. It’s a great divergence of punk, soul and blues of which I don’t think any band has done before or since, at least not as good. I love every song on this album and am having a hard time deciding which one to post here so I will do two. If you don’t like it I’m not very good at fist-fighting so we will have to settle it another way. Anyway the only thing that violence solves is….conflicts.
I’m going pick Hey Mom, I am particularly fond of the drums on this one. I also love the guitars and vocals-that is just a stupid and long-winded way of saying I like it all. Side note—if you are unfamiliar the band does not use a bass. Just two guitars, vocals and drums. Check it out:
Next I will generously give to you one of their instrumentals, there are two on here and both are fabulous. Train#2 was a particular highlight of the show when I have seen them live—top five bands I have ever seen. Pay attention to how it ends, it gets me so fired up I want to shout right in my mother’s face.
I hope I gave you enough time to reflect and fall in love with this band. The great news is the next two albums, Orange and Now I Got Worry get even better. Then comes Acme which is no slouch. Orange is in my top ten list on TriYou (coming soon) and I think I like Now I Got Worry almost as much. But we will have to talk about those in some additional vinyl pulls. I will say it is hard to find a run of four consecutive releases that I like as much as Extra Width, Orange, Now I got Worry and Acme. Any one of those would be a fine place to start but I like to start at the beginning, unless I’m reading a book, watching a movie or paying a prostitute to do sex on me.
Go get some!
